“I don’t pay attention to ads” Hmmm I have definitely said this before. AND I’m wearing a Gap t-shirt!! Now I feel stupid!
Thanks for posting this. I usually look at advertisements (like the ones shown) without recognising the sinister subtext lurking beneath the image. Over the years I seem to have just accepted that naked flesh and the female body sell products and create publicity, without question. I think it just shows how normalised these images have become. I hate to say this but I can't see things changing. We've become extremely desensitized to disturbing and exploitative imagery. Without legislative changes, to advertising laws and guidelines, things might get worse.
It's amazing isn't Geraldine- how accustomed we are to particular modes of advertising with very direct subtext. After watching this video I was reading a magazine (I think it was In Style) at the gym and just about every other page included an ad that depicted the female body in such an unrealistic manner. It is so sad.
