Round 1 Food Journal

Morning friends!

How we doin today? Good I hope???

It's 8:21 am. And no, I did not get up at 6 am as promised. If you caught up with me yesterday you would know that this is a pathetic first attempt at my new habit. Yeah, I'll be working on that one today. It WILL happen.

Food Mood Journal

Not too long ago I mentioned that I was going to start a food mood journal. This journal would be a place for me to write down thoughts on my food before meals, after meals and at various points along the way. It's been a really interesting process and I don't think I'm quite done with it yet but let's chat about what I've learned so far.

1. Thinking too much about food can be a disaster. Having food on the mind all day long makes me feel like a nutzo. I start thinking about what I should and shouldn't eat, how much of it, the calories. Yadda yadda yadda. You get the picture. So in this journal process I've had many lovely conversations with myself about staying relaxed, remembering that this is a way to learn about what foods energize me versus ones that might just not work well with this body at all. This is not a way to customize your own diet plan.

2. I do best when I eat complex carbohydrates first thing in the morning. My oats, toast, quinoa hot cereal and the like are what get my day going. Though my heart goes out to smoothies and often they are the first thing I think about when I get hungry, they serve me better as a snack or light lunch.

3. White flour and sugar make me tired as all get up! Really tired. Lazy. Foggy mind tired. Within about 30 minutes of eating food with the primary ingredients being white flour or sugar I feel pretty much like crud shortly there after. Lesson learned.

4. My body does not follow a specific eating clock. I typically wait until I feel a sensation of hunger before I eat breakfast. Now this normally isn't a problem if I workout first thing in the morning because I'm famished within seconds after I'm done. But on days when the workout will come later, I wait it out. Some days I wake up hungry (often as a result of eating late the night before) and other days it takes an hour or more to get hungry. It's been fun to see how different I can feel each day according to what I ate the day before and how much activity I had.

So, I'm going to keep doing this a bit longer as I think there is more to learn. I'm not rigid about the process though. Some days I forget entirely about the journal until lunchtime. But I think the flexibility works well with my particular mindset.

The fun part about it? You get to learn a great deal about your body! They are such unique and fantastic little things that are working all day long for you. A food journal is one opportunity for you to discover what feels best and see how that may or may NOT change the choices you make throughout your day!

So, that's it for now! More on the food mood journal in the future!

Have a fabulous day! :)

I think keeping this type of food journal is awesome. I love how much it can teach you. And isn't it crazy to realize how much time we can spend thinking about food?

Thanks Tina! It's been a really cool experience so far. I'm keeping the focus light and instead looking for the silver lining in this relationship with food that I have. :)
